Everything you need to know about the 2021 M1 iPad Pro

In the virtual Global Spring Loaded event held on 20th April 2021, Apple announced iPad Pro models that pack the in-house M1 chipset. Remember, the M1 chip was integrated with the 2020 MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro too. With this launch, Apple aims to improve the internals of the iPad Pro. The company claims that the new iPad Pro comes with an 8-core design that is likely to offer 75x faster CPU performance in comparison to the original iPad. Whereas, the graphics performance is largely boosted by up to 1500 times than that of the 1st generation iPads. Apple said that the new iPad Pro also supports PS5 and Xbox controllers with haptics.

iPad Pro Specifications

Apple is set to launch two different models of the iPad Pro: 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes. The 12.9″ model comes with a Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED display that has a resolution of 2732×2048 pixels. Not to forget, the display comes with ProMotion, True Tone, and P3 wide color support. The company claims that this brilliant display can reach up to 1600 nits peak brightness for HDR and 1,000 nits max for full-screen brightness.

The 11-inch model comes with a Liquid Retina display that has a resolution of 2338×16687 pixels and is capable of 600 nits brightness. As the previously mentioned model, it also includes ProMotion, True Tone, and P3 wide color support. 

Both the models support 5G connectivity and eSim support for the cellular models. Let’s not forget these iPads are compatible with Wi-Fi 6. There is 8GB of RAM in the 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage models, and 16GB RAM on the 1TB and 2TB storage models.

iPad Pro Camera

Apple has surely worked tirelessly to get the camera right on the new iPad Pro. The front camera features a 12MP sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens that supports “Center Stage”. Center Stage is a feature where the camera pans to keep the subject on the center of the screen when you are on a video call/recording something via selfie cam. As far as the rear camera is concerned, there’s a 12MP wide-angle and 10MP ultra-wide lens that comes with f/1.8 and f/2.4 aperture, respectively. With all this, there’s a LiDAR scanner too. All thanks to the ISP and Neural Engine, the iPad Pro features Smart HDR 3. 

The 11’’ iPad Pro weighs around 470 grams and measures 247.6×178.5×5.9 mm in dimensions, while the other model weighs around 685 grams and is slightly bigger with dimensions 280.6 x 214.9 x 6.4mm. Both the iPads will ship with a 20W USB Type-C power adapter. 

iPad Connectivity

Apple has upgraded the new M1 iPad Pro’s USB-C port to Thunderbolt 4 port. Apple talked about this improvement and claimed that the bandwidth for wired connection can be as high as 40Gbps with the right adapters and docking stations. It can be useful to work around high performance accessories such as external SSDs, displays with up to 6K resolution, and much more.

The new iPad Pro is compatible with Apple Pencil, Smart Keyboard Folio, as well as the Magic Keyboard, which is also available in a brilliant white color. 

iPad Pro Prices and Availability

The 11-inch model is priced at $799 (Wi-Fi) and $999 (Wi-Fi & Cellular), whereas, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,099 (Wi-Fi) and $1,299 (Wi-Fi + Cellular). 

For the users in India, the 11-inch model is priced at ₹71900 (Wi-Fi) and ₹85900 (Wi-Fi & Cellular), whereas, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at ₹99900 (Wi-Fi) and ₹113900 (Wi-Fi + Cellular).

Pre-orders for both models will go live on April 30th, 2021, while they will be available in the second half of May.

Looking at these specifications and M1’s performance on MacBooks, it seems these iPads can be the next big thing that would rule the market.
